Douglas- Thomas W. Stinson, 77, of Oak St. passed away peacefully at home on Monday February 13, 2023 after an illness.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years Sylvia N. (Shumaker) Stinson; his son Hugh T. Stinson and his wife Sera Cook of Douglas; 3 granddaughters Madeleine Cook Stinson, Rosalind Cook Stinson, and Charlotte Cook Stinson all of Douglas; and several friends and former coworkers. Born in Kansas County MO on March 7, 1945, he was raised in San Bernardino, CA and worked in Santa Rosa, CA before retiring to Freeland, WA. He lived in Douglas the past three years.
A 30 year educator and coach, Mr. Stinson was a Special Education Teacher at Santa Rosa High School and Slater Junior High School in California. He also served as the Track and Field Coach at both schools. He retired in 1997. He earned his BA from La Verne College and his Masters Degree from the University of the Redlands. He was a US Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran serving in the Reconnaissance Division before transferring his billet to the US Army Reserves and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
Always well liked, Tom was a popular people-person with a nice disposition. An avid outdoorsman he enjoyed fishing, hunting, crabbing, boating, and being outdoors. An avid runner, he also loved spending time on the water and was a member and Past Commodore at the Whidbey Island Yacht Club in Washington state. He was a member and past president of the California Teachers Association.
