Richard L. Desjardin, 89, of Whitinsville, passed away on September 29, 2023. He was born on August 16, 1934, in Whitinsville, the son of Louis and Aline (Roy) Desjardin.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Aline (Roy) Desjardin, and their children: Steven and his wife Molly Desjardin of Mansfield, James and his wife Tracy Desjardin of Queensbury, NY, and April and her husband Christopher Lowe of Marlborough. He was a beloved grandfather to Joshua, Caitlin (her husband Christopher), Jessica, Matthew, Emma, Elise, Megan, and Brady, and a great-grandfather to George. Richard also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Lucille Barber, Donald Desjardin, Leo Desjardin, and Eileen Busque.
Richard attended Blackstone High School and aside from his military career that allowed him to see the world, he spent most of his life in Whitinsville. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 and served for over 20 years, retiring as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in 1972. During the Korean War, Richard completed 75 combat missions over North Korea and received the esteemed Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air medals and numerous military awards and citations for his faithful service. After his military career, he worked for over 20 years at the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a Senior Systems Consultant, retiring in 1992 and remained a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Oliver Ashton American Legion and VFW Post 1385.
Richard was an active member of the community and enjoyed various hobbies. He was an avid ten-pin bowler, a fisherman, golfer, as well as a member of the Whitinsville Golf Club, where he served as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Governors. Throughout the years, Richard achieved three holes-in-one in golf, which he was very proud of.
A funeral service will be held on October 4 at 11:00 am. at St. Patrick's Church. Burial Service with Military Honors in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Providence Rd. Whitinsville will be Friday October 20, 2023 at 11:30 am. Calling hours will be held on October 3, 2023 from 4:00 pm. to 6:00 pm. at Jackman Funeral Home in Whitinsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
