Whitinsville- Kurken “Crocky” Garabedian, 98, of Sunset Drive, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester following a brief period of declining health. His family was by his side. His wife of 40 years, Alice (Varteresian) Garabedian died February 20, 1992.
He is survived by 2 sons, Robert K. Garabedian of Burnham, ME, and Steven M. Garabedian and his wife Eileen of Whitinsville; 3 grandsons, Christopher S. Garabedian of Whitinsville, Thomas K. Garabedian of Nashville, TN, and Robert F. Garabedian of Washington DC; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Azadouhi “Sally” Kulgeian, Thomas Garabedian, Arshalous “Sandra“ Topjian, Sara Hairyes, Michael Garabedian, and his daughter-in-law, Michelle Garabedian.
Born in Northbridge on January 5, 1926, Kurken was one of 6 children born to Levon and Lucy (Sudgian) Garabedian. He grew up in the New Village section and was a Northbridge High School graduate. A U.S. Army WWII veteran, he served as a sergeant in the European Theater, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Bronze Star. Following his service, he worked as a draftsman for Whitin Machine Works and Rice Barton Co. in Worcester. He then worked many years for the Northbridge Public School system as a custodian until his retirement.
A fixture in the town, Mr. Garabedian was a busy, sociable man who enjoyed visits with family and friends. He was well known at the town offices, restaurants, and grocery stores. A gem of the community, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to all.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 21 at 11 AM in Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St., Whitinsville. Calling hours will be held prior to his service from 9-11 AM. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Crocky’s memory may be made to the Soorp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Church, 315 Church St., Whitinsville MA 01588, or the charity of one’s choice.
