Douglas- Julius J. “Yuko” Gavlak, 89, of Culver City CA, formerly of Douglas passed away unexpectedly on Monday March 31, 2025.
He is survived by his two sisters Pauline R. Gavlak of Douglas and Mary Plante of Manchaug, and sister-in-law, Jackie Gavlak of Ohio; his deceased companion's family. He also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, neighbors, and friends. The love of his life Evelyn Cronin died April 10, 2022. He was brother of the late Helen K. Fox, John J. & Regina Gavlak, Joseph F. Gavlak and Francis A. Gavlak. He was also predecease by a brother in-law Dunbar Plante, a niece Darleen Plante and 2 nephews, Christopher Fox and David Gavlak. Born in Douglas on April 24, 1935, he was the son of Julius and Susan T. (Susienka) Gavlak and lived in California since 1963.
Mr. Gavlak worked as a manager for Voi-Shan Aerospace in California. Previously he worked for State Mutual Insurance Co. in Worcester. He was a Graduate of Douglas Memorial High School, Class of 1953 and later attended Salter's School of Business. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in New York.
Julius was a prominent member of St. Augustine’s Church and Knights of Columbus in Culver City. He enjoyed helping the nuns of The Daughters Of Saint Paul and spent many a days as the handy man at their bookstore helping them with various tasks. A foodie, he enjoyed fried clams, seafood, Italian food, maple walnut and rum raisin ice cream, cooking, and baking. He loved occasional trips to the casino, visiting old cemeteries, antiques, gardening, traveling with Evelyn, Boston sports and college football. Yuko loved to have family and friends visit him in California and had many special visits with his nephew Steven. Above all, Julius was a kind, happy, fun loving soul. If you had the pleasure of his company, you were sure to have a good laugh. He loved his family deeply and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
His Memorial Funeral Mass will be held Sat. April 26th, 2025 at 11:00 am in St. Denis Church, 23 Manchaug St. Douglas. Cremation burial will follow in St. Denis Cemetery. There are no public calling hours. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to The American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
