Douglas- Joyce B. (Berger) Virostek, 80, of N.W Main St. passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at home after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. 

        She is survived by her husband and best friend of 56 years, Don J. Virostek; 2 children, Eric C. Virostek, and Rachel J. V. Zurowski and her husband Bob all of Douglas; 4 grandchildren, Markus Virostek, Jennah Virostek Lucas Zurowski, and Benjamin Zurowski; her sister-in-law, Carol Mae Virostek of Douglas, and many close friends.

        Born in the Vernon Hill section of Worcester on Nov. 29, 1942 she was the daughter of Merton and Eleanor (Anderson) Berger and lived in Douglas 54 years. Joyce started her career as a computer programmer for Worcester County National Bank, then worked for a small startup computer company in Auburn which was bought out by Commerce Insurance. There she advanced in her career retiring after 25 years as Sr. Vice President in 1998. After her retirement, she worked with her husband Don in his law firm. She was a graduate of Auburn high school, and earned her BA degree at Clark University graduating Magna Cum Laude. 

        Joyce served two three-year terms on the Board of Directors of the Worcester chapter of the American Red Cross and was recognized for her contributions by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She was instrumental in creating the Whitin Reservoir Watershed District and was elected as the first clerk. Joyce also served many years as a  Corporator for Unibank For Savings. A woman of great faith, Joyce was member of St. Denis Church and served along with her husband Don, in the Pre-Cana couples to couples ministry, and was a clerk of their finance committee and parish council. She also co-chaired their Forward in Faith campaign, and was co-chairwoman of the gathering room addition committee. Always active she enjoyed spending time in Vermont, where she was an avid skier. She was a member of the singing group Post Road People who sang throughout New England.

            Her Memorial Funeral Mass in St. Denis Church, 23 Manchaug St. Douglas will be held Saturday April 1, 2023 at 11 am. Burial in St. Denis Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be too: St. Denis Church,Youth Ministry, 23 Manchaug St., Douglas, MA 01516.
