Joseph Tancrell Obituary

Uxbridge- Joseph Edward “Ed” Tancrell III, 91, passed away on Sun., March 24, 2024 at Beaumont of Northborough after a period of declining health.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, M. Constance “Connie” (Senecal) Tancrell; his daughter Anne E. Rayner-Cyr  and her husband Matthew Cyr of Milton, VT; a granddaughter, Katherine C. Rayner of Troutman, NC, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Fostine Lajoie, Robert Tancrell, Richard Tancrell, and Norman Tancrell.

Born in Milford on March 30, 1932 he was the son of J. Edward and Dorothy (Morgan) Tancrell and grew up in Uxbridge. He was a graduate of Uxbridge High school and proudly served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his service, Joe furthered his education earning an Associate’s degree in accounting from Worcester Junior College, a Bachelor’s degree from Clark University, and a Master’s degree in teaching from Worcester State University.

Joseph worked in Administration for State Mutual Insurance Company in Worcester for 35 years, and retired as a company Vice President in 1991. Over the years he had also worked part-time as a college professor for Quinsigamond Community College, Worcester State, Assumption, Anna Maria, and Nichols colleges. As a very involved resident of the town of Grafton, Joe volunteered in the Community Harvest Project and Grafton Land Trust.

Joe was fascinated with nature and loved traveling with Connie in their retirement and toured many beautiful places both domestic and abroad, and including many historical sites. He was a “big foodie” and always enjoyed dining out having a great meal partnered with a quality glass of wine. Joe grew up a member of St. Mary’s Church in Uxbridge and later was a member of St. Philips in Grafton where he was very active as a eucharistic minister, lector, and taught catechism.

As to his wishes, Joe will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory may be made to: Community Harvest Project, 37 Wheeler Rd., N. Grafton, MA 01536, or to the Grafton Land Trust, graftonland.org.
