John E Cooney Jr.

Whitinsville- John E. Cooney Jr. 80, formerly of East St., passed away on Sun. Aug. 20, 2023 at Lydia Taft House in Uxbridge after a long illness. His wife Joan S. (Howard) Cooney died in 1987.

     He is survived by a daughter Kathleen LeBlanc of Winchendon; a son John E. Cooney III and his wife Carol of Northbridge; 3 grandchildren Rianne Cooney, Ryan LeBlanc, and Ashley LeBlanc; a sister Elizabeth “Betty” LeBlanc of Auburn; and several nephews, nieces and friends. Born and raised in Worcester he was the son of John E. Sr. and Alice M. (Rogers) Cooney and lived in Whitinsville since 1966.

     Mr. Cooney worked as an associate scientist in the Research and Development Dept. for Astra Zeneca Pharmaceutical Co.in Worcester and Westboro for 40 years, retiring in 2002. Previously he worked for radio station WTAG several years. A graduate of Commerce High School he enjoyed spending time with his family, painting in oils, and all types of music. A man of great faith, his religion was very important him and he was member of St. Patrick’s Church.

     His funeral will be held Thurs. Aug. 24 at 11 am in St. Patrick’s Church, 1 Cross St. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours at Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St.Whitinsville are 9 to 10:30 am prior to his Mass.
