Douglas- Florence C. “Flory” (Byrnes) Gardiner, 77, of South St. passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sat. Oct. 2, 2021 at Lydia Taft House in Uxbridge. Her husband Robert W. “Bob” Gardiner died Feb. 8, 1983.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine C. Lamoureux and her husband Guy of Pascoag, RI; 2 grandchildren, Andrea and her husband Richard Barrows of N. Scituate RI, and David and his wife Alesandra Lamoureux of Fountain, CO; 3 great-grandchildren, Caroline and Cooper Barrows, and Jariah Lamoreaux; several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her son Steven W. Gardiner in 2020, and was sister of the late Lora “Dusty” Barley, Donna M. Curtin, and Harold “Lenny” Byrnes.
Born in Cambridge, MA on Nov. 13, 1943 she was the daughter of Harold and Hester (Goldstein) Byrnes and moved to Douglas in 1983 after the death of her husband. Previously she lived in Uxbridge and Franklin. She was also a resident at the Whitinsville Retirement Community.
A hard worker, Mrs. Gardiner worked at St. Camillus Nursing Home, the Milford VNA, and Dunkin Donuts. Finally, before retirement she was employed by Alternatives Learning Center for 15 years, driving for special needs individuals. She was a skilled seamstress, liked crochet, and enjoyed ceramics. She will be remembered for her strong will, her sense of independence, and her “heart of gold”. A faithful member of the Second Congregational Church, Flory was also active in their choir and The Pantry.
Her Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Sat. Oct. 9th at 11 am in the Second Congregational Church, 289 Main St. Douglas. Cremation burial with her husband will be in Scarborough, ME at a later date. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to: the Second Congregational Church, P.O. box 492, Douglas, MA 01516.
