Dr. T.G. Sambandan, a distinguished Malaysian chemist and researcher, passed away in Uxbridge, MA, on May 29, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born in Malaysia, Sam pursued his higher education in the United States, studying chemistry at universities in California and Arizona, where he obtained his PhD. After a short tenure in the private sector during which time he significantly contributed to the development of the foundational anti-cancer drug Taxol, Sam joined the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There, he spent over 15 years working alongside Professor Dr. ChoKyun Rha and Professor Dr. Anthony Sinskey on a wide range of biotechnology and natural products research initiatives.
Sam played a pivotal role in the Malaysia–MIT Biotechnology Partnership Program (MMBPP), which was founded by Professor Dr. Rha, MIT’s first tenured Asian woman. Through this initiative, he collaborated deeply with the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM). His extensive research contributions spanned oil palm biotechnology, genomics, metabolomics, and natural product chemistry, including specialized work on Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) and Centella asiatica. Sam also identified, extracted and purified the valuable natural product of Shikimic acid in oil palm phenolics.
A prolific innovator, Sam was a named inventor on numerous U.S. and international patents related to oil palm-derived nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and bioactives. Throughout his career, he served as a vital co-investigator and presenter on dozens of high-profile international research activities and publications.
Sam leaves behind his brother, T. Nadarajan, three sisters, T. Letchumy, T. Meenakshi, and T. Joy Primalar Devi, his sister-in-law, Saichit Meekhong, and a host of beloved nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and colleagues for his brilliant mind, his kind nature, and the deep professional legacy he leaves behind.
Calling hours for Sam will be held on Sunday, June 7th from 2-4 PM in Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St., Whitinsville. A traditional Pooja service will be held on Monday, June 8th at 11 AM in Rural Crematory, 180 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605.
