Whitinsville- Ruth V. (Valis) Melia, 91, passed away on Wed. Aug. 29, 2018 at Milford Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She had been a resident of St. Camillus Nursing Home for the past 3 years. She was predeceased by her husband, and former Northbridge Police Chief Thomas J. Melia Jr. in 1998.
        She is survived by 4 sons, also former Northbridge Police Chief, Thomas Melia III and his wife Joanne of Whitinsville, retired Mass State Police Detective, Lieutenant, Robert Melia and his wife Deborah of Sandwich, retired manager of Connecticut Dept. of Motor Vehicles, John Melia and his wife Susan of Wallingford, CT, and Barnstable, MA Police Dept., Detective James Melia and his wife Maryjane of Sandwich; 6 grandchildren; 9 great children, as well as several nieces and nephews.
        Born in Whitinsville on February 19, 1927 she was the daughter of Anthony and Helen (Greene) Valis and was a lifelong resident of the town. She worked for the former Whitin Machine Works, and as a clerk for the former Flaggs pharmacy for many years. A woman of great faith, Ruth  was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, who more than anything enjoyed spending time with her family. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Camillus for their outstanding care provided to Ruth.
        Her funeral Mass will be held on Fri. Aug. 31 in St. Patrick’s Church, 1 Cross St., Whitinsville at 11am. Calling hours at Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St., Whitinsville will be held on Fri. Aug 31 prior to Mass from 9:00-10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donation’s in Ruth’s memory may be made to St. Camillus Health Care Center, 447 Hill St., Whitinsville.
