Uxbridge-Norman H. “Itchy” Demers, Sr., 88, of Marion St. died Tues. Oct. 8 at Beaumont Nursing & Rehab. Ctr. In Northbridge after an illness.  He is survived by his wife Lillian A. (Lamontagne) Demers with whom he just celebrated his 66th anniversary; his 3 children, Sandra M. Gazaille-Lavoie and her husband David of Uxbridge, Cheryl M. Gantt and her husband Ken of Uxbridge, Norman H. Jr. and his wife Lisa Demers of Sutton; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister Muriel Swenson of Milford and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by 2 brothers Bernard O. Demers and Robert E. Demers.  Born in Worcester on June 12, 1925 he was the son of Henry E. and Gertrude B. (Courchaine) Demers and lived in Uxbridge over 40 years.  

Mr. Demers was a long time truck driver working for Johnson Motor Freight, Redding Trucking, and Holland’s Express.  In his later years he worked at the NV Café as a cook, waiter, and bartender.  Over the years he also worked for Lamontagne burial vault and drove for the elderly.  He was a decorated WWII U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Asiatic-Pacific, European, and African Theatres.  He was involved in D-Day and also served in the Philippines.  He was a member of the VFW Post 1385 in Uxbridge and was a life member and past Commander of the Charles A. Rice American Legion in Uxbridge.  For 50 years, he was involved and marched in the local parade and placed flags on veterans’ graves.  He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and cutting firewood. He was a familiar neighborhood figure who could often be seen sunning himself on his porch.  

His funeral will be held Sat. Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. in Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd., Uxbridge.  Burial in the VA National Cemetery in Bourne, MA will be Tues. Oct. 15 at 1:45 p.m.  Calling hours at the funeral home are Fri. Oct. 11 from 5-8 p.m. and Sat. Oct. 12 from 10-11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Itchy’s memory may be made to NEADS (Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans), PO Box 213, W.
